Final positions of the 304 sambah stationsSAMBAH - Static Acoustic Monitoring of the Baltic Sea Harbour Porpoise

"Chelonia Ltd has, through the development of the T-POD and the successor the C-POD, created a whole new field of conservation research.

Through the deployment of non-invasive PODs, data on Odontocete presence and echolocation characteristics now give new insights on animal behaviour and ecology and also make it possible to estimate absolute abundance even in low-density populations.

Not only is Chelonia pushing for a continuous development of PAM technology, but also provides unprecedented support to on-going projects, in spite of the fact that the company is small, with limited personal resources.

In the SAMBAH project, based on two year continuous deployment of 304 C-PODs (see www.sambah.org), we have stretched this support to the limit, and are amazed by the capacity and readiness of Nick Tregenza and his team to help us out, to fix bugs and provide new features that made it possible for us to handle the enormous dataset – corresponding to approximately 400 years of data - that has been generated by SAMBAH.

This support has been of paramount importance for the successful completion of the project. SAMBAH could recently report reliable estimates of absolute abundance of the Baltic Sea harbour porpoise population and distribution maps indicating previously completely unknown potential breeding grounds on the shallow banks in central Baltic Sea."
