Other materials relevant to marine issues

The original POD was developed to study porpoise interactions with gill nets. The fishermen of Newlyn, Cornwall, UK, were very helpful with this. The research showed that porpoises were often acoustically active around their nets without being caught and that the animals at highest risk of bycatch might be silent while pursuing fish that have no swim bladder, such as mackerel.

Some background material and research tools relating to these, and other cetacean conservation issues, are available here.

Ship collision model

A simple 2D model of collisions between fast boats and large cetaceans.

Bycatch models

Some free programs that model bycatch.

Fishing methods

Power estimation software for mitigation trials in fisheries.
